Could Have Done Better

from Wildcat Chuck Charles by Charles Ellsworth

/

about

This was another song that started out as a weird idea. The ghost of a former love shaming you for your current behavior and realizing you are no more than the sum of your past and the best thing to do is move on until it all catches up to you.

lyrics

I heard the fountain of youth
was buried deep in her eyes
so I kept them for myself
swallowed them with my pride
buried them deep and out
her soul came
she was wagging her finger
saying “shame, shame, shame”
I know who you are and I know who you’ve been
you ain’t no better than the worst type of man
get what you want and get the hell out
is there anything left of you?

One day i’ll grow wings and i’ll fly back home
where they serve whiskey in the jar
and the buffalo roam.
For now i’m just off trying to settle the score,
watching my brother go to prison,
dodging a holy war.
Well If i’m wrong I guess that they’re right,
coming for me and i’ll be leaving in the night.
With a notch on my pistol and a man in his grave,
I guess i’ll live to fight one more day.

She was the apple of my eye
in the eye of the storm
and all I could think about was just keeping her warm
deep in the night by the light of her eyes.
Oh I should have tried to forget her,
could have done better by my fellow man
but you never can
go back and change the past
just like you always wanted to.
So you roll up your sleeves and get on with your life,
don’t you look back keep swallowing that pride
tell yourself there’s nothing left for you.

There’s a bad luck wind and it’s been blowing up my way
says it’s here to stay.
She says it’s here to stay.
She’s the devil’s right hand and she’s wrapped around my heart
been there from the start oh she’s been there from the start.
